"A great lecturer can make all the difference during your study..."

HOW TO APPLY
Nellie
Master of Laws

Why did you decide to study a Master of Laws?

I'm super passionate about the research component of studying, especially within law, and I believe it’s fundamental to the community as a whole.

I decided to specialise in Disaster Law because I saw how the Canterbury earthquakes affected my family and community, and it’s part of what shaped me into who I am today.

I feel that contributing to research around how disasters affect different communities will allow me to make a difference and have a positive impact.

Why did you choose UC for postgrad?

UC has a brilliant law faculty. There is also a strong connectedness with disaster law, which is especially important in Canterbury after what the communities here experienced with the earthquakes. I felt that it was really important to continue that research in a place that has experienced the effects of disasters firsthand.

What has your study experience been like so far?

My master’s is by thesis, so it's mostly self-directed work. However, there's a really great community of law postgraduate students. I’m completing my master’s through the LEAD programme, which has a lot of cool events like writing retreats and morning teas. It maintains the social aspect of university and supports both your academic and social wellbeing.

What do you like about studying in Christchurch?

I love the people. I think Christchurch is awesome. It's so connected andsuper social; there is so much to do here. And I think it's very cool to see itgrowing into what is essentially a brand new city. It's very exciting.

How is working with your supervisors?

Oh, it's so fun! I’ve had both of my supervisors since my first yearstudying law, so it’s quite cool to work with them in a very differentenvironment. I meet with them about once a month to discuss my thesis, but there are lots of social events throughout the year where we also seeeach other.

I get along with them really well, and getting to know them outside of thelecture theatre has been great. I’ve gotten to know them on a personallevel, and I can tell that they really support my work and want to see mesucceed.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not studying?

I do a lot of performing arts! I have been involved in a number ofperformances outsideof UC that really keep my passion going. I’m also working at a café andteaching dance to kids between the ages of 8-18.

Is there a standout moment or experience from your postgradstudy so far?

I attended a Disaster Risk and Resilience conference hosted by UC lastyear and presented research that I had conducted during a summerresearch scholarship programme. It was a really cool opportunity.

What do you want to do after completing your master’s?

I would like to continue the journey into academia. I think it's really cool, and I believe that the student-lecturer relationship is very important. Agreat lecturer can make all the difference during your study, and I'd loveto be that person for students in the future.
